GUARDIANS OF THE COAST: YOUTH AND WOMEN ADVOCATING FOR MANGROVE CONSERVATION
The Roots of Change project empowers women and youth in Pemba to take an active role in the conservation of mangrove ecosystems and in influencing environmental policies that affect their communities.
This initiative combines on-the-ground restoration activities such as mangrove planting and monitoring, with capacity building in policy engagement. Participants are trained on legal frameworks, environmental governance, and advocacy skills, enabling them to effectively engage with local authorities and national processes. By connecting local knowledge with policy influence, the project strengthens community voices in decision-making and promotes the inclusion of women in environmental leadership. The ultimate goal is to protect coastal ecosystems while ensuring that policies reflect the priorities of those living closest to the resources.
