Women in Nature Tanzania connects emerging young conservationists with experienced female leaders to foster professional growth and build a strong support network. We support women by facilitating attendance at key conferences and hosting monthly virtual capacity-building meetings. This approach helps participants gain new knowledge, develop skills, and expand their professional networks, empowering them to overcome challenges and thrive in the conservation sector.

The Roots of Change project empowers women and youth in Pemba to take an active role in the conservation of mangrove ecosystems and in influencing environmental policies that affect their communities. This initiative combines on-the-ground restoration activities such as mangrove planting and monitoring, with capacity building in policy engagement. Participants are trained on legal frameworks, environmental governance, and advocacy skills, enabling them to effectively engage with local authorities and national processes. By connecting local knowledge with policy influence, the project strengthens community voices in decision-making and promotes the inclusion of women in environmental leadership. The ultimate goal is to protect coastal ecosystems while ensuring that policies reflect the priorities of those living closest to the resources.

“From Shore to Store” is a women-led initiative that combines nature-based entrepreneurship with marine conservation in coastal Tanzania. Implemented by Women in Nature Tanzania (WiN-TZ), the project supports women and youth in seaweed farming not only as a source of sustainable income but also as a tool for ecosystem restoration. By training participants in seaweed cultivation, harvesting, value addition, and eco-enterprise development, the project empowers coastal communities to turn marine resources into viable businesses while protecting the marine environment. Seaweed farming contributes to climate resilience by improving water quality, sequestering carbon, and enhancing biodiversity, making it a nature-positive economic activity. Participants are also engaged in awareness-raising and advocacy for ocean health, linking conservation and livelihood. The project promotes gender equity, environmental stewardship, and economic empowerment, enabling women to become leaders in both sustainable business and coastal conservation.

The Women in Nature Network (WiN-TZ) collaborated with Agua Segura to implement the Sustainable Tobacco Program (STP) In-Depth Assessments in selected regions of Tanzania. This project focused on evaluating the environmental, social, and gender-related dimensions of tobacco farming. WiN-TZ led data collection efforts and community engagement, ensuring the inclusion of women’s voices and perspectives in shaping sustainable agricultural practices. The findings aim to inform responsible supply chain practices and drive environmental improvements in tobacco-producing areas.
